Trick or Treating
The Eagle Point Homeowner's Association is recommending trick-or-treating from approximately 6:00 - 9:00 PM on Thursday, October 31.
If you do not wish to have trick-or-treaters come to your door please make sure your porch lights are "off". Trick-or-treaters should be respectful of those homes with lights "off".
Each Halloween, we have drivers who are apparently unaware of the swarming pedestrian traffic. We have witnessed many 'near-misses' involving vehicles and children. Local residents from outside Eagle Point love to visit our neighborhood, so you can expect many other people visiting, resulting in very heavy foot and vehicle traffic. Please do not assume that drivers will yield to children walking in the street. We recommend wearing bright or reflective clothing and carrying flashlights and/or attaching LED lights to each child.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office published "Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips" in 2012:
http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2012/10/shelby_county_sheriffs_office_16.html
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, twice as many children are killed Halloween evening than on other nights in accidents involving a pedestrian and a vehicle.
• Never let your children trick or treat alone. Older children should go with friends and younger children should be accompanied by an adult.
• Never let younger children approach a home unattended and teach them to never enter a home or car without prior permission from a parent or guardian.
• All children should wear reflective clothing and carry a glow stick or flashlight after dark.
• Make sure that children can see and breathe unrestricted when wearing costumes and masks. All children's costumes should be made from flame resistant materials.
• Know where your children are and whom they are with at all times.
• Talk openly with your children about safety practices and do not be afraid to discuss scenarios.
• Teach children to resist any unwanted attention from a stranger by yelling, kicking and screaming "this person is not my father/mother".
• Parents should inspect all candies and toys their children receive before allowing them to eat or play with it.

Safety & Security
The HOA will be publishing homeowners' letters which demonstrate their personal experiences and are relevant to our efforts to improve safety and security in Eagle Point. One such letter from a homeowner is below:
"I meant to send feedback several weeks ago regarding one of the newsletters, but have not had a chance. My husband and I wanted to thank you for drawing attention to the street parking, mailbox/street light maintenance, and speed within the subdivision. The amount of cars parked on my street after about 6pm, is ridiculous….especially when you are looking at the homeowners’ empty driveways. I have stopped my car on three separate occasions in the last month after children ran out into the street from in between cars. The large amount of street parking changes the aesthetically pleasing features of the neighborhood, but more importantly, creates a dangerous environment for the children trying to play outside. I would also like to mention the street lights. I took my dog for a walk around 8:30pm one night about two weeks ago, and counted 38 flameless street lights. Knowing the amount of car “break ins” in the last year, these dark streets are just an invitation to this type of crime. My point in sending my thoughts, are really to say thank you for bringing awareness to the homeowners. Life is incredibly busy for all, and many times people are not aware of maintenance issues or potential safety hazards that could easily be corrected."

No Soliciting in Eagle Point:
We continue to have problems with unwanted solicitations in our community. We cannot prevent these people from being on our public streets, but we can discourage them from coming to our door. If possible, obtain the name, address, phone number, and name of the business from the individual. Remind them that this is a covenant community and solicitors are NOT welcome.
If you feel at all uncomfortable with this person, ask them to leave your property and call the Shelby County Sheriff's office at 205-669-4181. They will check this person out and respond with a deputy if the situation warrants it. If you feel in immediate danger, call 911.

Speeding: Personal Letters from Homeowners, and Call to Action
"I was just behind a white Acura MDX...license.... She was speeding faster than anything I've ever seen in a residential area, while applying makeup. At one point she had to slam on her breaks to avoid hitting workers' vehicles at a new construction home on Eagle Point Circle. She had to put her vehicle in reverse; she was so close their vehicle. She was traveling towards 119 entrance. PLEASE forward her information on. She was all over the road, both lanes."
"Someone tried to pass me the other day on the main road. I laid on my horn and they changed their mind. I called the sheriff and they couldn't get there as many officers were tied up directing school traffic. In hindsight, I wish I had let her pass me and then I would've gotten her tag number."
Report Dangerous Drivers!
Since the EPHOA is receiving a high level of complaints about speeding vehicles, we encourage all Eagle Point residents to report dangerous drivers. You should know that the Alabama Legislature has passed a law that places a 25 mph speed limit on subdivision roads in unincorporated Shelby County. Randy Cole, County Engineer, has stated that "one of the biggest complaints that we get is speeding in subdivisions". We need your help in reporting these incidents.
How You Can Help:
• Write down or take a picture of the license plate of the dangerous driver's vehicle
• Report the incident (include date, time, and license number) to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department
• Phone: 669-4181 or 911,
• Web: http://shelbyso.com/report.php.
• You can also submit this information to the EPHOA at [email protected] and we will assist you in reporting the incident.
We believe that encouraging all residents to participate in the neighborhood watch will improve safety for all of us. Thank you for your help in keeping our residents safe!
