County schools may see decreased funding due to new law
  
Local educators are still waiting to see what effect the Alabama Affordability Act will have on their schools.While several local private schools have not received any feedback about the law, the Shelby County School System expects to see reduced funding because of it. The law, which was passed by the state Legislature in late February, gives tax credits to parents who want to transfer their child from a failing school to a private or non-failing public school. It also allows businesses and individuals to “donate to a ‘nonprofit scholarship granting organization’ that provides scholarships” for students to transfer from a failing school, according to the Alabama House Republicans’ website. In late May, the Legislature voted down a request by Gov. Robert Bentley to implement a two-year delay before the tax credits take effect. Shelby County Schools Superintendent Randy Fuller said much is still unknown about the law, but he expects it to decrease the county school system’s budget. Hearing on Pelham school study is Monday night
  
Pelham will hold the first of multiple public hearings on the city’s school system feasibility study on Monday, June 3 at the Pelham Municipal Courthouse. The public hearing will be held during the Pelham City Council’s meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the courthouse, which is at 32 Philip Davis St. During the hearing, Dr. Ira Harvey with the Decision Resources firm will present the results of the company’s Pelham school system feasibility study. “Honestly, I hope we have a huge crowd there that night,” said City Council President Rick Hayes, noting the city will hold at least one more public hearing after the June 3 hearing. “The presentation will take about 30 or 45 minutes, and then the council will have a chance to ask questions. After that, we will open the floor to the public.” In late March, the council agreed to pay the Decision Resources firm $30,000 to conduct the Pelham city school feasibility study. The RSAS continuously monitors the ShelbySO Dispatch Log for activity involving street names in Eagle Point subdivision, and automatically sends Alerts via SMS text message to the EPHOA Safety & Security Monitors. The Monitors will immediately assess the content of the Alert and use judgment and established priority guidelines to determine whether to broadcast the Alert to the entire Network. Two local schools among Newsweek’s best
  
Oak Mountain High School and Spain Park were among Newsweek’s best schools in Shelby County. Oak Mountain High School came in at number 578 while Spain Park High was number 613. In the rankings, Newsweek cited Oak Mountain’s graduation rate of 97 percent and that 92 percent of its students attend college. Oak Mountain’s average SAT score was 1603 out of a possible 2400, and the average ACT score was 24.4 out of a possible 36. For Spain Park, Newsweek cited its graduation rate of 95 percent, along with the 97 percent of Spain Park students who attend college. Spain Park’s average SAT score was 1719, while the average ACT score was 24.1. Jefferson County also had schools that were listed among Newsweek’s best. UPDATE: Study: Pelham school system feasible
This is an update from the article posted in the last newsletter regarding the Pelham feasibility study.
  
Pelham could form its own city school system separate from the Shelby County School system, but should consider a tax increase to support the proposed city system, according to a city school system feasibility study.
In the study, which was conducted by Ira Harvey of the Vestavia-based Decision Resources firm and posted on Pelham’s website on June 3, Harvey wrote Pelham forming a separate school system “does not present a difficult financial circumstance due to the tax base.”

Summer has finally arrived and children are out of school. Parents, please watch your children. Know where they are and what they are doing. We have had calls already at Your Office about cars being egg’d. Also, children are running up and down streets ringing people’s doorbells and then running. Eagle Point is currently researching security companies for such things as this along with speeding, theft, etc.
  
Waste Management Garbage Cans – Point of Clarification
  
In the Eagle Pointer a couple of weeks ago there was a statement about trash cans being 5 feet from the road and not in the road.  We apologize for the confusion this has caused some homeowners.  Waste Management has asked us to place the garbage cans no more than 5 feet from the curb in any direction so that the truck’s remote arm can easily grab the can.  It is fine for you to continue to put the wheels in the gutter or to place the can at the edge of your driveway.  We have several neighbors who have been placing their cans in the middle of the street, especially in some of the cul-de-sacs, making it difficult for the Waste Management trucks to get through and pick up our trash.
  
Yard Maintenance
  
We are all glad summer is finally here and we are able to enjoy our yards and being outside. Please be aware of your neighbors when you are doing lawn maintenance and try not to run your mowers and blowers before 7:00 am or after 7:00 pm. Please pass this along to your yard service companies as well. The HOA has asked NatureScape to adhere to the 7-7 policy when maintaining the common areas around Eagle Point.

EPS&T are offering a children's tennis clinic this summer.  Doug Cound, who has taught our clinic for the past several years will be back!  The dates are July 15th - 18th (4 days) and the cost is $40.00 per child for EPS&T members.  Hopefully, we will have enough kids sign up to fill two sessions from the membership, but if not, we will open the clinic to the neighborhood at a slightly higher price.
  
Children need to be 6 years old or older
The first session will be at 9:00 am (2nd session will follow)
The courts will be reserved during the clinic hours

EPHOA
  
We received several complaints this week from neighbors about garbage on the street.  Waste Management is the contract garbage collection service for Eagle Point homeowners.  As part of you contract they provide trash cans to put the garbage in and they empty the cans every week, usually Tuesday between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
  
As we all should know Waste Management will not pick up loose bags or other items left on the curb or in the street.  Please be mindful and considerate of your neighbors and use your trashcans.
